First Visit to Asunafo

The last group of interns gave loans out in Abomosu and Asunafo. We live in Abomosu so we have been able to visit with people a lot. We went to Asunafo to visit with our current loanees. The town is only a couple miles away but due to the heat we opted for a cab. All five of us packed into the cab and I was lucky enough to be given the front.

As we were walking through town we saw a number of traditional bamboo homes like this one.

Most of the recipients in this area are farmers, with a majority being cocoa. We were able to hike through the jungle and visit with a number of people. These are some cocoa trees and a guy was harvesting and collecting the cocoa.

The cocoa beans are in these big pods which grow all over the tree from the trunk up into the branches.

The cocoa starts out as these little flowers.

We crossed a DIRTY river on a makeshift bridge to get to the actual farms.

Asunafo has some parts set up on a hill. I enjoy looking out over the town.

Nkansah showed us various ways to use the machete, including how to cut down a tree. Nate went on to cut down his own.

People just carry their machetes like it is a plastic sword.

Nkansah showed us another way to carry our backpacks. I did pretty good with mine. I still can’t imagine how difficult it is to carry some of the items we see. I will try to do a future post of pics where people are carrying items on their heads.

Even though we are away from home, we get subtle reminders of where home is.
