We had the opportunity to take a break from our work and travel anywhere in the country we wanted. As we researched, discussed, and thought about where to go we thought “Hey why not see it all?” And thus begins our tour of the wonderful country of Ghana.
We started our trip heading to Accra then over to Ada Foah which is located a few hours East of Accra. This is a beach town which is not often frequented by tourists. I honestly don’t know why because it was absolutely beautiful. As you can see the station in Accra where we caught our tro tro was not quite so beautiful.
Our day in Ada Foah started out with an early morning to watch the sun rise on the beach. As we walked down the beach hundreds of small white (almost clear) crabs were scurrying across the sand. I found it quite humorous to watch Chloee and Maddie freak out over them. I had to tease them a little…
Tan lines come in all shapes and sizes…
The rising sun
Totally worth the early morning
The picture doesn’t capture the beauty, but the moon was still bright and visible as the sun was rising.
Peeking through the trees
This is one of my favorite photos of the sun rising.
After spending some time watching the sun rise on the beach we went on a stroll through town back to our guest house. The houses are different than what we have been used to. I figure if you live in poverty, living in poverty on the beach is the way to go! Today really was a day to relax and do basically nothing. Here are some pics of where we stayed.
Cocoloko Beach Camp Resort
We stayed in cools little huts
They sweep the dirt every day (this same thing happens at homes in the village)
If we were here a month or two later we would get to see sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach.
Our very own private beach
Complete with Hammocks…
We had a great time playing in the waves
If you look closely you will see four little heads out in the water.
Chloee had a little fight with one of the waves…you should have seen what the wave looked like after!
We saw some fisherman pulling in a rope from the ocean. We later found out it was a huge net full of various kinds of fish. They listed a bunch off to me when I asked but I only remember barracuda. We decided to help pull the rope.

After a while I realized my hands started to hurt. I had blisters everywhere and decided it was time to quit. I counted 11 on my right hand and 3 on my left. As the Ghanaians put it I have “soft hands.”
After pulling on the ropes some much needed rest was taken
And we didn’t have to leave the beach to order breakfast/lunch
We figured it took about 5-6 hours total to get the rope all the way in. Unfortunately we were not there to see the net full of fish. If we wanted to they would have given us some fish for helping out.
In the afternoon we chartered a boat to take us around the river Volta River.
The dock where we got on the boat.
Twinners waiting for the boat to arrive.

We made a stop at a local rum factory. Apparently people from all over the world come here for this home brewed rum. The guy who runs it all told us he is famous. He offered samples at the end but of course we did not take them. We had a good opportunity to explain why we do not drink alcohol.
The rum used to be stored in these clay pots.
The juices from this sugar cane are squeezed out with a machine then sent to ferment for a week in these barrels.
It is then distilled
And becomes rum

We continued to another little area where we were able see some village life and these random crocodiles. They wanted to charge 30 cedi to see them and dance for us. We opted against that.
